BEIJING, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) "honor day" was observed at the ongoing International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing Thursday.
Bamboo products such as clocks, pen holders and books are displayed at the INBAR Garden. A space breeding project of bamboo, rattan and flowers was also launched.
The INBAR Garden is themed on "Bamboo and Rattan for Green Growth." It was made of low carbon and environmentally friendly bamboo materials.
A number of exhibitions and events will be held at the garden showcasing bamboo and rattan's contribution to green development, and its use in science and technology, industry, culture and environmental protection.
"The bamboo and rattan industry is a green industry that has ecological, social and economic benefits," said Jiang Zehui, co-chair of INBAR, adding that she hoped the garden would show the role of bamboo and rattan in environmental protection and sustainable lifestyles.
INBAR, established in 1997, is a multilateral development organization that promotes environmentally sustainable development using bamboo and rattan.
The Beijing horticultural expo, themed "Live Green, Live Better," is the world's largest expo of its kind and opened to the public on April 29 in Yanqing District. It will last until Oct. 7.
The expo has attracted exhibitors from 110 countries and international organizations. There are indoor displays and outdoor gardens, highlighting the integration of life and ecology. It is estimated that 16 million visitors from around the world will visit the expo.
