KUALA LUMPUR, April. 6 (Xinhua) -- Du Zhaocai, Deputy minister of China's State General Administration of Sport, was elected as FIFA Council member at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress here on Saturday.
Du was elected among Asia's six representatives who will serve on the FIFA Council for the next four-year term till 2023. Also elected were Praful Patel of India, Japan's Kohzo Tashima, Mariano V. Areneta, Jr. of the Philippines and Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi of Qatar.
All five male members secured the simple majority after one round of voting.
Mahfuza Akhter Kiron of Bangladesh joined them after securing the simple majority required when she obtained the most votes in the elections for the FIFA Female Council position.
After the election of the FIFA Council member, Du withdrew from the contest of the AFC vice president. Ganbaatar Amgalanbaatar of Mongolia was elected as the new AFC vice president for the East Zone.
The AFC Congress also saw Sheikh Salman retained his presidency without contest, as AFC Member Associations also elected AFC Executive Committee members.
