BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The ballet "Lady of the Camellias" by the Hamburg Ballet was staged Friday in Beijing's Tianqiao Theater.
Choreographed by American director and choreographer John Neumeier, the ballet will run in the theater until March 31.
Based on Alexandre Dumas fils's novel of the same name, the ballet tells of the meandering and tragic romance between Parisian courtesan Violetta Valery and young bourgeois Alfredo Germont.
The ballet has been well received by the public and deemed as one of Neumeier's best works since its premiere in 1978.
Feng Ying, director of the National Ballet of China, said Neumeier presents an excellent adaptation of Dumas's tragedy with outstanding choreography and detailed portrayal of the characters' psychology.
