UN General Assembly president extends Chinese New Year greetings

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The president of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, on Tuesday extended her greetings to the Chinese people for the Lunar New Year.

"On the occasion of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival, I extend my warmest greetings to the Chinese people. I wish you health, peace and happiness! Happy Spring Festival!" she tweeted in the Chinese language.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended his warm wishes for the Chinese Lunar New Year through a video message.

Guterres began his message in Mandarin: "Chun Jie Kuai Le!" (Happy Spring Festival!) "I'm pleased to send you my best wishes on this auspicious occasion."

He thanked China and the Chinese people for their commitment to the United Nations and called for efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous world.

"Despite the headwinds in our world today, we know that when we work together, we get things done. In that spirit, I wish you and your families health, success and happiness in this new year," the UN chief said.

The Chinese Lunar New Year falls on Tuesday this year.
