China's Li takes Youth Olympics shot put glory

BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's Li Xinhui clinched the girls' shot put (3kg) gold at the Youth Olympics here on Monday by throwing 80cm more than her nearest rival.

Li recorded a best attempt of 18.33m to finish ahead of Yelizaveta Dorts of Belarus, whose furthest effort was 17.53m. Republic of Moldova's Nina Capatina claimed the bronze medal with 17.42m from her longest throw.

China also secured the bronze medal in the boys' hammer throw 5kg, with Wang Qi finishing behind gold medallist Mykhaylo Kozhan of Ukraine and Valentin Andreev of Bulgaria.

Kozhan notched a best throw of 85.14m, comfortably ahead of Andreev's 81.67m and Wang's 75.90m.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Luke David's took gold in the boys' 100m with a combined two-race score of 20.71 seconds. Nigeria's Alaba Olukunle Akintola was second with 21.00 seconds and Japan's Seiryo Ikeda third with 21.12 seconds.

Other athletics gold medallist on Monday included Ethiopa's Tasew Yada in the boys' 800m, Burundi's Jean de Dieu Butoyi in the boys' 1,500m, Kenya's Jackson Kavesa Muema in the boys' 3,000m and Ethiopa's Abrham Sime in the boys' 2,000m steeplechase.
