NEW DELHI, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a passenger train derailed in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, railway officials said.

The accident occurred near Harchandpur railway station in the state's Raebareli district.

"Eight coaches of the New Farakka Express went off tracks this morning. While six people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals," a railway official said.

The train was headed to the Indian capital from eastern state of West Bengal's Malda town when the accident occurred.

Local TV channels showed footage of rescuers scouting through the derailed coaches to look for those trapped inside and reported that National Disaster Response Force has been rushed to the accident site.
