NEW DELHI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people have been killed in rain-related incidents in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in the past 24 hours, officials said Thursday.

The casualties were reported from six districts across the state.

"Some nine people have died due to heavy rains and flooding in the state in the past 24 hours, taking the toll to over 50 since Saturday," a disaster management official said.

"While three people died in Faizabad district, two lost their lives in Unnao district. One person has been killed each in Auraiyya, Hardoi, Meerut and Etah districts," he added.

Apart from the disaster relief force, the Indian Air Force has also been pressed into service for rescue work in the state.

The weather department has predicted scattered showers in the next 24 hours in parts of the state. "More rains are expected in some parts of the state," a weather official said.

Uttar Pradesh is not the only Indian state affected by monsoon this year. Over 450 people died in heavy rains in the southern state of Kerala this monsoon.
