TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed lower Monday on higher yen against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 300.89 points, or 1.33 percent, from Friday at 22,396.99.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 6.28 points, or 0.36 percent, lower at 1,738.70.
Decliners were led by transportation equipment, electric appliance, and information and communication issues.
The day's turnover was around 2,164.0 billion yen (19.51 billion U.S. dollars).
