HONG KONG, June 10 (Xinhua) -- In support of World Environment Day, the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) of Hong Kong held the Zero Waste Fun Fair here Sunday to promote the message of "use less and waste less."

The fair comprised green booths, food counters and upcycling workshops, involving nearly 40 government departments, non-government organizations, green and community groups and public utilities.

With "Dump Less, Save More" as its theme, the fair was held to promote the message of "use less, waste less," especially to avoid the use of disposable plastic products.

Speaking at the fair, Hong Kong's Secretary for the Environment Wong Kam-sing said that the adoption of "Beat Plastic Pollution" as the theme of World Environment Day this year shows the global problem of excessive plastic waste.

Wong said that China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is exploring how to implement a producer responsibility scheme targeting plastic product containers.

A preliminary consultant study suggests plastic beverage containers should be given priority under the scheme and a cash rebate can be considered to provide incentives for the public to recycle them, Wong said.

Smart reverse vending machines can also be used to assist enhancing recycling efficiency, he noted, adding that the HKSAR government will also step up promotion on reducing the use of plastic straws and disposable utensils among the trade and the public.

Founded in 1990, the ECC aims to enhance public participation in protecting the environment. It holds promotion events for World Environment Day every year.
