MADRID, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Lewis Hamilton on Saturday took pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalonia just outside of Barcelona on Saturday.
Hamilton finished the last qualification session ahead of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas with the Ferrari duo of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen in third and fourth, while the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were in fifth and sixth.
Hamilton set a qualifying time of one minute 16.173 seconds, just four hundredths ahead of Bottas for his second pole of the season and the 74th of his career.
Meanwhile Spanish duo of Fernando Alonso (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz Jr (Renault) will start Sunday's race in 8th and 9th place to give the home fans something to cheer about.
Finally Torro Rosso's Brendon Hartley crashed at turn nine in final practice and badly damaged his car, consequently he failed to participate in qualifying and will start from the back of the grid.
