GABORONE, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Botswana's Township Rollers began their group stage campaign of the 2017/18 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions league with a 1-0 victory over visiting Ugandan side Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) FC here on Friday.

The only goal of the game was scored on the half hour mark by striker Lemponye Tshireletso after being set up by winger Joel Mogorosi.

He cleverly rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into an empty net to hand his team maximum points.

The win takes Rollers to the top of group A after other group members Esperance of Tunisia and Al-Ahly of Egypt played to a draw on the same day.

The home side controlled much of the first half and could have extended their lead before the halftime break.

Mogorosi followed a rebound after Tshireletso fired a thunderbolt from outside the box that KCCA goalkeeper parried back into lay but his shot went narrowly wide.

Five minutes before the break, the home side orchestrated a superb attack move with Motsholetsi Sikele delivering a telling cross into the box that was met by Segolame Boy's header, but the shot came off the crossbar.

The visitors came from the break with more determination going forward and put the home team under pressure.

They tested their goalkeeper on several occasions but could not find a goal to bring them level.

Tshireletso nearly got his brace midway through the second half firing a shot from outside the box that came off the upright much to the relief of the visitors. Rollers will now travel to Tunisia to face Esperance in a fortnight aiming to maintain their position at the top of the group. Enditem
