TOKYO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks extended losses Friday morning as renewed concerns over U.S. protectionism after President Donald Trump said he will impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports triggered a global sell-off.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 627.12 points, or 2.89 percent, from Thursday to 21,097.35.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 38.50 points, or 2.21 percent, at 1,701.70.

On the main section all industry categories retreated, with iron and steel, precision instrument and marine transportation-linked issues comprising those that declined the most by the morning break.
