KAMPALA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Cranes midfielder Farouk Miya has moved on loan to Azerbaijan Premier League side Sebail Football Club.
Belgian side Standard Liege confirmed that they have agreed that the Ugandan international will move to Sebail FC on loan. "Standard Liege, Sabail FK and Farouk MIYA have reached an agreement. Our young Ugandan offensive midfielder is on loan to the Azerbaijan club until the end of this season without purchase," said the Belgian side in their statement.
The Cranes star joined Standard Liege in 2016 but was loaned out to Royal Mouscron last season before returning to Standard Liege. Miya scored the crucial goal in the 1-0 win over Comoros for the Cranes to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after 39 years of waiting.
Miya's move to Azerbaijan comes after he has been struggling to get playing time at Standard Liege, where he made only one appearance this season.
His new team Sebail FC currently sit sixth in the Premier League. Miya previously played for Vipers Sports Club in the Uganda Premier League and the Kampala Junior Team (KJT).
Mujib Kasule, a senior coach and instructor in Uganda told Xinhua on Friday that Miya's move is good because he will then be actively playing. "I think Miya will get more playing time and this is good for his career growth," added Kasule.
Uganda also has professionals playing in Austria, Egypt, South Africa, Vietnam, USA, Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania and Romania.
