BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Winter Solstice (Dongzhi), the 22nd solar term of the year, falls on Dec. 22 this year.

On Winter Solstice, the Northern Hemisphere experiences the shortest day and the longest night in the year. From then on, the days become longer and the nights become shorter.

In Chinese culture, it marks the beginning of deep winter and a break from farming in traditional agricultural society.
