COLOMBO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Over 3,300 people were arrested in islandwide raids conducted by the Sri Lankan Police which began Thursday and ended Saturday, police said.

Those arrested had been taken in for various crimes such as driving under the influence of alcohol, evading courts and those involved in drug smuggling and peddling.

Over 16,000 police officers took part in the raids, police said.
