NEW DELHI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and two others injured after a truck fell on a car in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Saturday.
The accident occurred in the state's Unnao district, some 65 km from capital Lucknow.
"The truck driver lost control of the speeding vehicle and overturned on the car carrying seven people, including four members of a family, late Friday night," a police official said.
The car was crushed under the truck, killing five people on the spot, he said, adding that the injured have been admitted to a local hospital. "They are battling for their lives," he said.
Eye-witnesses told cops that the sand-ladden truck was travelling at high speed that eventually led to the fatal accident.
"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official said. "A manhunt has been launched to nab the truck driver who has been booked for rash and negligent driving," he added.
India has one of the highest numbers of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
