KUWAIT CITY, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) will deliver the first batch of relief aid to Yemen on Wednesday for those affected by Cyclone Mekunu, the Kuwait News Agency reported Tuesday.

KRCS will also send a volunteer team to Yemen in addition to the aid including food parcels and blankets, according to KRCS Chairman Hilal Al-Sayer.

On May 24, the Yemeni government declared the archipelago province of Socotra a disaster area, after Cyclone Mekunu struck the island.

The devastating tropical cyclone has killed 18 people, and displaced more than 200 families, local officials told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, four ships sank off the island, several vehicles were washed away by floods, and communication was cut off in most areas of Socotra, they added.

Located 380 km south of the Arabian Peninsula, Socotra has a population of 50,000, and boasts hundreds of rare plant species unique to the island.
