NEW DELHI, April 6 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and several others injured Friday after a tractor carrying farm workers in its trolley skidded off the road and fell into a canal in southern Indian state of Telangana, police said.
The tractor fell into Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project canal near Waddipatla village of Nalgonda district, 128 km southeast of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana.
"This morning in a tragic accident, a tractor carrying over 30 farm workers, mostly women, fell into canal," Ramna Reddy, a police officer told Xinhua via telephone.
"So far nine bodies have been fished out and all of them are women. Several others have been rescued and admitted in nearest hospital."
According to officials, the farm workers were going to Pulicherla village for daily work.
Police have registered a case and ordered investigations.
Preliminary reports suggest the tractor driver lost control over his vehicle and plunged into canal.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
