NAIROBI, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) will probe sexual misconduct allegations leveled against a local rugby star and his friend said to be also involved in the sport that have gone viral on social media throughout the Easter Weekend.
In an Instagram post, budding female musician Wendy Kemunto, accused the duo one who was part of the victorious national rugby 7s team squad at the Victoria Falls 7s in Zimbabwe, of gang raping her in February.
Kemunto claimed she is now pregnant following the incident where the player lured her to his house following a night out in the capital Nairobi, drugged her before repeatedly assaulting her with the friend who was unknown to her.
"The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has been made aware of reports about alleged sexual misconduct involving a contracted Kenya Sevens player. The matter will be reviewed as soon as practicable by the KRU, in line with existing procedures for all contracted players," the Union wrote in a statement on Monday.
"It is also important to note that with a report having been made to law enforcement authorities, the KRU cannot comment further about the allegations pending the outcome of investigations. KRU wishes to state that it does not condone sexual harassment or any other activity that goes against the spirit of World Rugby Regulation 20 and remains committed to continued respect, empowerment and increased participation of women in all aspects of the sport of rugby," KRU added.
The gang-rape sparked intense debate on social media with most calling for action against the players and pressing KRU to deal with this particular case as well as the reported rampant culture of gang rape among local rugby players.
The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has stated it was looking into the allegations and has spoken to the budding artist as the investigation continues.
