JAKARTA, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and another was seriously injured as landslides and floods struck North Sumatra province of western Indonesia, a disaster agency official said Tuesday.
Heavy downpours since Monday were blamed for the natural disaster in Sibolga district, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency.
The landslides took place in Sikaje Kaje village, leaving two people dead, another seriously wounded, and three houses destroyed, the spokesman told Xinhua in a text message.
Separately, in Aek Muara village, rescuers have recovered one corpse of a child as floods hit the village, he said.
The victim was swept away by strong currents of the floods, said Sutopo.
Soldiers, police personnel and those from search and rescue offices and disaster management agency have been undertaking emergency relief operations in the affected areas.
