TOKYO, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as investors opted to secure gains following the market's recent run with a retreat in European issues also providing some impetus.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 224.11 points, or 1.01 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,925.10.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 12.70 points, or 0.72 percent, at 1,762.45.
Oil and coal products, machinery and foods-linked issues comprised those that decline the most by the close of play.
